How often should compressor oil be changed?

Discharge temperature and the quality of the intake air are what really set compressor oil life. Every increase in temperature raises the oxidation rate noticeably.

Mineral or synthetic?

Mineral products cost less up front; synthetics give a clear life advantage at high temperature and leave fewer deposits. On screw compressors with high running hours, switching to a synthetic often lowers total cost.

The risk on reciprocating machines

Carbon build-up around the valves of a reciprocating compressor carries a fire and efficiency-loss risk. Product choice and drain interval should therefore be set together with discharge temperature measurements.

Monitoring

Viscosity increase, acid number and residue measurements show whether the interval is right. The condition of the air filter and separator element also feeds directly into oil life.
