What is an environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL)?

Updated: 2026-08-12 · Gemlik Energy

An environmentally acceptable lubricant meets criteria for biodegradability, low toxicity and non-bioaccumulation, for use where the lubricant may come into contact with water.

Where it is required

Stern tubes, steering gear, deck hydraulics and subsea equipment — anywhere oil could reach the water — are the typical applications. Some regional regulations make EAL use mandatory at those interfaces.

Converting from mineral oil

A conversion needs system flushing, a check on seal and hose compatibility, and control of water content. Permitted residual mixing levels differ from product to product.

Performance

Current EAL products are comparable to their mineral equivalents in load carrying and oxidation resistance; the selection should still be made against the equipment approval list.
