In Marine and Offshore, equipment availability converts directly into cost. Greases look like a small line in that budget, yet the wrong choice is one of the most common causes of unplanned downtime. Why it matters in this sector

Greases work where an oil cannot stay in place: deck machinery, ropes, open gears and rolling bearings. The NLGI consistency and the base oil viscosity are chosen together — low base viscosity for high-speed bearings, high for slow, heavily loaded applications.

In a marine environment, water washout resistance and corrosion protection are decisive on top of that. Wire rope greases are formulated to penetrate into the rope and protect the inner wires.

Selection criteria

• The equipment builder's approval list and minimum performance level
• Operating temperature range and ambient conditions (humidity, salt air, dust)
• Whether the viscosity grade suits the load and speed profile
• Balance between drain interval and total cost of ownership
• Packaging type and how it fits the plant's internal transfer set-up
