How is an oil drain interval set?
Drain intervals are still run off the calendar in many plants. Yet oil life depends on temperature, contamination and load — the same product can last twice as long in one machine and half as long in the next.
What analysis looks at
Viscosity change, oxidation, water content, wear metals and additive depletion are the core indicators. Engines add BN depletion and soot loading; hydraulic systems are governed by particle counting to ISO 4406.
A single measurement rarely decides anything — the information is in the trend across samples taken regularly from the same point.
When an interval can be extended
Where temperature is under control, filtration works and no water is entering, the interval can be extended on the evidence of analysis. That cuts both lubricant cost and waste oil volume.
Any extension has to be weighed against the equipment builder's warranty terms.
The cost balance
The oil itself is a small share of total maintenance cost; downtime and equipment damage are the large items. Shortening intervals is therefore rarely the economical answer — using the oil's real life, with proper measurement and filtration, usually is.
