ISO VG 68 grade oils
Viscosity is the first thing to settle when choosing an oil: load-carrying capacity, film thickness and cold-start behaviour all follow from it. This page covers the equipment that typically calls for ISO VG 68 and lists the catalogue products in that grade.
Where this grade is used
- Compressor & Refrigeration Oils
- Gear & Bearing Oils
- Hydraulic & Turbine Oils
- Specialities & Other Fluids
ISO VG 68 products in the catalogue
- Shell Corena S4 R 68 — Synthetic compressor oil

- Shell Omala S2 G 68 — Industrial gear oil
- Shell Omala S2 GX 68 — Industrial gear oil
- Shell Omala S4 Gxv 68 — Synthetic gear oil
- Shell Tellus S2 MX 68 — Hydraulic system oil
- Shell Tellus S2 VX 68 — Hydraulic system oil

- Shell Naturelle S2 Hydraulic Fluid 68 — Environmentally acceptable lubricant
- Shell Naturelle S4 Gear Fluid 68 — Environmentally acceptable lubricant
Before changing grade
- Moving one grade up increases film thickness but makes cold pumpability harder.
- Moving one grade down reduces churning losses yet raises the risk of film breakdown under high load.
- The equipment builder's viscosity window should be the reference for any change.
- If the system is not fully drained, the resulting mixed viscosity has to be accounted for.
