Lubricant storage and shelf life
Time in the store quietly affects field performance. A drum that has taken up moisture can be outside the target cleanliness class before it is ever used.
Physical conditions
A closed, dry area with limited temperature swing is preferred. Where outdoor storage is unavoidable, drums should be positioned so water cannot pool on the head, and covered.
Typical shelf life
For unopened mineral-based oils the typical figure runs to a few years; greases and emulsion products are shorter. The manufacturer's data sheet is what governs.
Stock control
First in, first out, clear labelling and a recorded receipt date are simple but effective measures. For long-standing stock, a visual check and, if needed, an analysis before use are recommended.
