Can different oil brands be mixed?

Updated: 2026-08-12 · Gemlik Energy

Two products at the same performance level can look technically similar and still rest on different additive chemistries. Mixing usually causes no trouble — but the exceptions are expensive.

The risks

Incompatible additive packages show up as sediment, filter blocking, foaming and loss of demulsibility. With greases, mixing thickener types leads to softening and oil bleed.

The sound approach

When changing brand, drain the system and flush with the new product where practical. Keep the residual share of the old product low and schedule the first analysis at a short interval after the change.

Record it

Document the change so that the move from one product to another stays traceable for warranty and equipment approval purposes.
