SAE 10W-40 grade oils
Viscosity is the first thing to settle when choosing an oil: load-carrying capacity, film thickness and cold-start behaviour all follow from it. This page covers the equipment that typically calls for SAE 10W-40 and lists the catalogue products in that grade.
Where this grade is used
- Engine Oils
SAE 10W-40 products in the catalogue
- Shell Rimula R6 M 10W-40 — High-speed diesel engine oil
- Shell Rimula R6 MS 10W-40 — High-speed diesel engine oil
Before changing grade
- Moving one grade up increases film thickness but makes cold pumpability harder.
- Moving one grade down reduces churning losses yet raises the risk of film breakdown under high load.
- The equipment builder's viscosity window should be the reference for any change.
- If the system is not fully drained, the resulting mixed viscosity has to be accounted for.
