Shell Alexia 100 vs Shell Alexia 140 — what is the difference?

Updated: 2026-08-12 · Gemlik Energy

Both products sit in the Engine Oils group and are regularly considered as alternatives to one another. The difference is mostly the viscosity grade, and therefore the load and speed profile of the equipment they suit.

Which one to choose

The viscosity window stated by the equipment builder decides. If both products fall inside it, favour the higher grade for high load and high ambient temperature, and the lower grade where cold starting and low friction matter more.

Where it is used

This group covers main engines on vessels, auxiliary diesel generators and stationary diesel engines on shore. On cylinder oils the base number is matched to fuel sulphur content, which sets the balance between deposit control and ring wear.

On medium and high speed engines the dispersancy of the additive package, soot handling and piston cleanliness come first. Where an extended drain interval is the goal, BN depletion and soot loading should be tracked through regular oil analysis.
