Shell Corena S4 R 68 vs Shell Gas Compressor Oil S4 PV 190 — what is the difference?

Updated: 2026-08-12 · Gemlik Energy

Both products sit in the Compressor & Refrigeration Oils group and are regularly considered as alternatives to one another. The difference is mostly the viscosity grade, and therefore the load and speed profile of the equipment they suit.

Which one to choose

The viscosity window stated by the equipment builder decides. If both products fall inside it, favour the higher grade for high load and high ambient temperature, and the lower grade where cold starting and low friction matter more.

Where it is used

For compressor oils the decisive property is resistance to oxidation and carbon build-up at discharge temperature. Screw compressors are about long service intervals, reciprocating machines about cleanliness around the valves.

For refrigeration oils, miscibility with the refrigerant, a low pour point and oil return from the evaporator are the critical criteria. Ammonia and HFC systems call for different base oil families.
