Shell Omala S2 G 320 vs Shell Omala S2 G 460 — what is the difference?

Both products sit in the Gear & Bearing Oils group and are regularly considered as alternatives to one another. The difference is mostly the viscosity grade, and therefore the load and speed profile of the equipment they suit.

Which one to choose

The viscosity window stated by the equipment builder decides. If both products fall inside it, favour the higher grade for high load and high ambient temperature, and the lower grade where cold starting and low friction matter more.

Where it is used

Gear oils have to carry the high contact pressure on tooth flanks. The EP additive package delays pitting and micropitting, and synthetic products give a clear life advantage at high temperature.

For bearing and circulation oils the priorities are heat removal, water separation and long service without deposits. Circulation systems in paper, steel and power plants are typical applications.
