Why is water a problem in turbine oil?

Water is the most common contaminant in turbine oil. It accelerates oxidation, degrades the additive package and raises the risk of corrosion and of film loss in the bearings.

What demulsibility means

Demulsibility describes how quickly an oil separates from water after the two have mixed. An oil with good demulsibility lets water settle in the tank so it can be drained off. Ageing and contamination weaken that property over time.

Removing the water

Free water can be drained from the tank; dissolved and emulsified water calls for coalescing filters or vacuum dehydration. Which method applies depends on the quantity and on how the system runs.

Prevention

Seal condition, gland steam pressures and the desiccant breathers on the tank should be checked routinely. Stopping water at the source is always cheaper than separating it afterwards.
