What is an NLGI grade? Choosing grease consistency

Updated: 2026-08-12 · Gemlik Energy

The NLGI grade describes the consistency — the stiffness — of a grease, running from 000 to 6. It is based on a penetration measurement and governs both pumpability and how well the grease stays in place.

Which grade goes where

NLGI 2 is the standard for most general bearing applications. Centralised lubrication lines usually call for NLGI 0 or 1 for pumpability, while open gears and ropes need higher tack and a heavier base oil.

In cold ambient conditions, dropping one grade softer improves line pressure and feed reliability.

Consistency is only half the answer

The base oil viscosity is what really decides the selection. Low base viscosity limits heat generation in high-speed bearings; high base viscosity carries the film in slow, heavily loaded service. The thickener type then sets water resistance and temperature behaviour.

Marine service

On deck applications exposed to salt water and washing, water washout resistance and corrosion protection come first. Lithium complex or calcium sulphonate thickened products are the usual choice in those conditions.
