How is wire rope grease applied?
A wire rope wears in two places: internal friction between the wires and corrosion on the outside. Rope grease has to limit both, which is why penetration into the rope matters as much as surface coverage.
Application methods
Brush and cloth application suits small diameters, while pressure lubricators drive the grease down to the core. Cleaning off dirt and old grease residue before application markedly improves the result.
Frequency
The interval depends on rope load, the number of sheave passes and the environment. Salt build-up in marine service calls for more frequent application; the rope maker's maintenance instruction governs.
Checking the result
After application an even film should be visible on the outer wires, and rope diameter measurements and broken-wire counts should be recorded regularly.
